Doom/Death from France

André was quite positive about Remembrance’s album Frail Visions, so he got in touch with both members to get to know more about this French act.

Hello, I was very impressed by your debut. How are the reactions until now? I’ve the feeling that the press have mixed feelings.

Carline: hi and thank you. We only had few reviews of Frail Visions so far, but until now we received very good feedback and very kind words from people supporting us.

Before we talk further about the debut album Frail Visions, can you give our readers a small introduction?

Carline: Frail visions is desperate Doom/Death metal offering sorrowful and gloomy keyboard atmospheres, deep grunts, and heavy but also up-tempo guitar parts.

Both of you are also member of Lethian Dreams. What decided you to form the band Remembrance? Just a musical choice or was there something different?

Carline: The idea of creating Remembrance came from Matthieu who wanted to start his own project. Few months later I joined him, I like to make different styles of music, that’s why I thought the idea was appealing. Remembrance is of course different from Lethian Dreams, but you can hear some similarities too.

Matthieu: Lethian Dreams` music is more atmospheric; I like to express sadness in a beautiful ethereal way with Lethian Dreams; but I wanted to try something more desperate and darker. That`s why one and half a year ago I decided to create Remembrance.

What are the influences for Remembrance? I compared you with a band like Shape Of Despair, but with more up-tempo parts.

Carline: It’s an honour to be compared to Shape of Despair; we are both fond of their music. Shape of Despair is definitely an influence, as well as My Dying Bride, Saturnus, Rapture.

Matthieu: We have a huge range of influences; Shape of Despair is the most noticeable in Remembrance, but I would also add Anathema, Paradise Lost. We didn`t want to keep only slow tempo parts just to make our music fit the "funeral doom" definition.

Who’s responsible for the music in Remembrance?

Carline: We both compose the music of Remembrance, most of the time I come with the keyboard parts and then Matthieu adds guitars and I also add some guitars if needed.

And what about the lyrics? Are these lyrics based on own experiences or are they just fiction? They definitely fit with the music, an overall depressive attitude.

Carline: The lyrics are mostly based on experiences and feelings (except for Thy Decay which is fiction), but I try to make them as elusive as possible.

All songs from your demo Among Lost Illusions can be found on later records. 3 of them are on your debut and one, Beyond The Waters, can be found on the Total Rust compilation album. As I’m unfamiliar with the demo, can you tell me if the sound have changed before it ended on these records?

Carline: Thy Decay, To Lost Illusions, and Eternal Disease are the same songs that feature on the album, but those are pre-mastered versions. Concerning Beyond The Waters, it is an alternate version of Murdering My Faith. The lyrics are totally different, and Murdering My Faith has death vocals while Beyond The Waters hasn’t.

You signed a contract with an Israelian label. Not the first thing you might think of. Can you tell me how you got in contact with them? What are your first impressions?

Carline: Totalrust Music first contacted us to feature on a compilation and they also were the firsts to show interest in releasing our debut album. Totalrust seemed serious and professional so we decided to sign with them. We are very glad of our label and very proud to be the first band they signed.

On your website is mentioned that you want to tour in the future, but first of all, you have to search for other band members. What’s the status of this search and why can’t you find the people in Lethian Dreams?

Matthieu: We have finished searching for other members; the line up is now complete and we would be glad to start playing gigs. Two of the members that have joined Remembrance also play in Lux Incerta.

We had problems in Lethian Dreams due to the distance between the members. Carline and I live in northern France and the other members live in Paris. It was impossible to go on this way ‘cause rehearsing tended to be more and more difficult and expensive and we were finally stuck in the process of recording the album. We decided to continue the band only with Carline and I. That`s why we looked for members in Remembrance that also lived in northern France, to prevent any problem due to the distance.

France has quite a number of good (doom) metal bands, but seems so now and then forgotten by the rest of Europe. Do you have a good support from your local scene? What are your opinions about this?

Matthieu: For now we haven`t really looked for support as we wanted first to complete the line up. Members of Lux Incerta supported us from the beginning and we were glad when they agreed to join the band.
I think Ataraxie is well known abroad, and I hope the other doom bands will follow their trail. Let`s wait and see.

Well, that’s about it. Any more comments?

Carline: Thanks a lot for this interview and thanks to everybody who support us
Matthieu: Thank you for your time and for this interview.
